You are invited to sign up for the Frame Weaving Workshop, which will take place on the first Saturday of spring!
Over the course of several hours, participants will create their own unique weaving pieces on a frame and learn the secrets of the contemporary weaver’s workshop. The class also includes learning about basic weaving weaves, understanding the construction of fabric in an activity called ‘human loom’. Weaving is one of the oldest crafts and the thread loom is a traditional weaving tool. Working on the loom is not only a craft but also an art requiring precision, patience and imagination. The workshop will be a unique opportunity to create together on professional equipment!
Workshop highlights:
1. Introduction – mini presentation on what weaving is, imparting knowledge of basic weaving weaves.
2. Understanding of fabric construction in an activity called HUMAN LOOM.
3. Weaving a frame, choosing inspiration, whether from the realm of nature – landscape or abstract art. Improvisation is welcome; you can prepare your own visual inspirations to transfer to the fabric.
4. Actual weaving under the guidance of an instructor.
5. Opportunity to work together on a professional thread loom, which will be available for use throughout the workshop.
6. Cutting off the fabric, finishing.
The workshop will showcase publications and books on textiles.
The workshop will be led by the artist Marta Pokojowczyk
Marta Pokojowczyk is a graduate of painting at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław (2013) and art history at the University of Wrocław (2011). She has been working with textiles since 2012. In 2014/2015, as part of the cross-border Erasmus programme for young entrepreneurs, she completed an internship at the Helena Loermans Weaving Atelier in Odemira, Portugal. Hand weaving is a key stage in her work, which allowed her to explore the issue of the structure of the canvas as a painting substrate. Creating spatial objects on the loom is a transposition of the artwork from the zone of pure viewing into the area of direct human contact. In 2017, she founded Interweave Studio in Wrocław (now in Suprasl, Podlaskie Voivodeship) – a research atelier where art, craft and the humanities are intertwined. She is currently following the trail of weavers in north-eastern Poland learning traditional techniques such as seipak and translating them into the language of contemporary art. She has participated in projects, solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, including Germany, Italy and Portugal. Scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in the field of visual arts in 2019 and 2023.
The workshop will take place on March 22 (Saturday) from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Art Studio of the ‘Śródmieście’ Community Centre in Białystok – 17 Icchoka Malmeda St. The price for participation in the workshop is PLN 150 per person. All materials and tools are provided. Registration at: 500 136 195.
