Franciszek Karpiński – 18th century composer of Podlasie | lecture by Waldemar Smaszcz

Franciszek Karpiński – court composer of Izabela Branicka. This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of his death. In recognition of his invaluable contribution to Polish culture and literature, a lecture dedicated to the 18th-century artist will be held. Franciszek Karpiński will be presented by Waldemar Smaszcz – an outstanding literary historian, critic, translator and essayist.

The lecture by Waldemar Smaszcz will be a unique opportunity to learn more about the life and work of Franciszek Karpiński, as well as to learn about his connections with the Białystok region. During his stay at the court of Izabela Branicka in Białystok, in the years 1785–1788, the poet created his most famous works. It was in the parish church in Białystok that his “Pieśni nabożne” (Devotional Songs) were first performed, and were later published in 1792 in Supraśl. Karpiński is the author of famous idylls, such as “Laura i Filon”, and unforgettable religious songs, including “Kiedy ranne wstają zorze” (When Morning Lights Rise) and “Wszystkie nasze dzień sprawl” (All Our Daily Matters).

The lecture will take place on April 25 (Friday) at 6:00 p.m. 18:00 at the “Śródmieście” Community Center in Białystok (13 Jan Kiliński street, second floor). Free entrance!
