The director of the “Śródmieście” Community Center in Bialystok and the author Dawid Smaczny invite you to an exhibition “Between”.
Dawid Smaczny is an independent artist, born in 1976 in Białystok, a graduate of the A. Grottger State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Suprasl. In his youth, he specialised in artistic textiles and now practises easel painting in acrylic technique. His works are part of the broadly defined current of contemporary magical realism. Privately a lover of science fiction literature and an audiophile. His personal passions, his ability to perceive human emotions and contemporary issues such as loneliness have a significant influence on the themes of the resulting works.
– When creating, I am always accompanied by music – usually from the stable of good old 4AD, such as Dead Can Dance or Pieter Nooten. And there is always a book along the way too. The very time of creating a painting is a time of work and self-discipline. It is also an adventure that in the end is not always what I assumed – spreading the first colour, creating the first shape – it remains a bit of a mystery until the end – the author says.
Easel paintings and tapestries
The paintings on display are landscapes set in a magical, surreal space. They are the personification of feelings such as fear, hope or longing. They show a ‘state of limbo’ between the multifaceted present we live in and where we would like to be. The leitmotifs are multi-dimensional gateways and portals or compositions with elements of fantastic architecture inspired by the world of florophantom.
– Despite the aura of gloom or melancholy emanating from the images at first glance, I think that the viewer will also perceive hope accompanying each of the scenes, as well as the omnipresent life and its desire in various forms – Dawid Smaczny concludes.
The exhibition consists of paintings and works from David Smaczny’s early work – tapestries. These unique fabrics were made primarily with linen weave and in a technique of their own, and finished with wooden elements that fit into the composition of the fabric.
Exhibition opening
The opening of Dawid Smaczny’s exhibition ‘Between’ will take place on November 28 (Tuesday) at 18:00 at the “Śródmieście” Community Center in Białystok (13 Jan Kiliński street, second floor). The exhibition can be viewed from Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, free admission.
The exposition will be open until December 29, 2023.
