The director of the “Śródmieście” Community Center in Bialystok and the author Karol Więch invite you to the exhibition „Losses”.
Karol Więch is a graduate in cultural studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice. He is a visual artist, cultural expert and employee of the Institute of Cultural Studies at the University of Bialystok. His professional interests oscillate around philosophy of culture, anthropology, mediated communication and audiovisual culture and have a significant impact on the content layer of the resulting works.
The artist in today’s world
– I treat each work as a separate universe constituting a form of my externalisation of surprise, indignation and reflection on the surrounding reality. On the other hand, among the selected works are those in which I enter into a dialogue with the history of armed conflicts or the history of art, posing a question about the role of the artist in the contemporary world – as a researcher, observer, critic and subject of expression, says Karol Więch.
Contrasts, abstract lines, deformations and compositions
The exhibition at the ‘Śródmieście’ Community Center in Bialystok will present a series of 20 paintings made in ink and acrylic technique.
The artist’s penchant for using strong, often contrasting colours is readily apparent in his work.
– These are paintings created with acrylic paint, where line, shape, pure stain and deformation are positioned higher than realistic representation. I try to flatten and de-realise reality, minimising it to essential forms, says the artist.
The Losses of the title are a metaphor for inadequacy, a damage, a blank that needs filling. Not only the creator himself, but above all the viewer of these works, should assume the role of the one who fills in.
Exhibition opening
The opening of the exhibition „Losses” will take place on September 14, 2023 (Tuesday) at 18:00 at the “Śródmieście” Community Center in Białystok (13 Jan Kiliński street, second floor) as part of the Municipal Art Salon.
The exhibition can be viewed from Monday to Friday from 10:00-18:00, admission is free. The exhibition will be open until October 14, 2023.
