Exhibition of creativity “My interests and passions”

“My Interests and Passions” an exhibition of works made by students with the autism spectrum of the Non-Public Primary School “BARWA” in Białystok at the “Śródmieście” Community Center in Białystok

Artistic expression as a kind of communication

The authors of the works are children with autism spectrum who attend the Non-Public Primary School BARWA in Białystok. Thanks to the exhibition, it will be possible to get to know their world in more detail, because children through drawings convey what is important to them. The works were made on A4 cards in various art techniques, such as collage, crayons or pencil.

– There is a belief that children with this spectrum live in their own world, it is difficult to reach them because they do not want and do not need to initiate social contacts. As a result, they very often experience a lack of acceptance, understanding, and even social exclusion. However, these are children who, despite a slightly different way of functioning, have various hobbies, often similar to the passions of neurotypical people. It happens that the range of interests of children with autism spectrum disorders is quite unusual, as they may find a liking, for example, in observing the mechanism of a clock or analyzing the timetable of a given bus – says Mrs. Urszula Surowiec, the first grade teacher of the Non-Public Primary School BARWA in Białystok.

April is Autism Awareness Month

You will be able to see how people on the autism spectrum perceive reality at the exhibition at the “Śródmieście” Community Center in Białystok. April is autism awareness month, so it’s a great time to organize such an event. The exhibition shows the creativity of children and how diverse autism is.

– Usually, people on the autism spectrum are very thorough and committed to activities they are interested in. So you can say that they are specialists in a certain field. The exhibition aims to show the society children’s talents, their passions and interests, so that every visitor to the exhibition can get to know their world and discover how unconventional the tastes of children with autism spectrum are – sums up Mrs. Urszula.
